Karen Casey is a life-long resident of Colchester North and currently lives in Valley, Colchester County with her husband, Glen. They have two grown sons, Shawn and Kevin, and two grandchildren.


 Karen has been involved with the educational system throughout her life. A graduate of the Nova Scotia Teachers’ College, she also has a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education from Mount Saint Vincent University, and a Masters in Education from Saint Mary’s University.


Karen has a wide range of experience in the school system. She was a school teacher in the town of Truro, an administrator at North River Elementary School, a Regional Supervisor with the Colchester East Hants District School Board, an Assistant Superintendent with the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board, and an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Education, Acadia University and the University of Prince Edward Island.


An active community member, Karen has served on the Central Nova Industry Education Council, Valley Recreation Association, Valley United Church Youth Committee, Truro Boys and Girls Club, Association of Nova Scotia Education Administrators and the Colchester-East Hants Health Authority as Chair.


Elected in June 2006 as the MLA for Colchester North, Karen has been responsible for several portfolios in government, including Minister of Education, Minister of Health, Minister responsible for the Youth Secretariat Act and Minister responsible for the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act.


Karen was re-elected in 2009 and joined the Liberal caucus in 2011.
Re-elected in 2013 as a member of the Liberal majority government, she is the Minister of Education and Early Childhood Development.
