Manning MacDonald was first elected to the Nova Scotia Legislature in 1993, and has been re-elected five times. This followed 15 years service as Mayor of Sydney. During his time as Mayor, he worked hard to revitalize the waterfront of the city. He is especially proud of having the boardwalk and Centre 200 constructed during his tenure as Mayor.
MacDonald has extensive experience in Executive Council, handling key portfolios such as Economic Development, Labour and the Petroleum Directorate. He is a former Government House Leader and present Liberal House Leader.
MacDonald’s education background includes St. Francis Xavier College, the University College of Cape Breton and Dalhousie University.
He is married to Ann MacDonald of Sydney. He is a father and a grandfather. He is proud of his daughters Elizabeth and Alison and his step-son Robbie and his five grandchildren.
