Grand Pre Named UNESCO World Heritage Site
Situated in the province's picturesque Annapolis Valley, Grand Pre was settled by French colonists in the 17th century.
The area is home to some of the most extreme tidal ranges in the world. Early Acadian settlers used a complex system of dykes to make the land arable.
It became an area of great importance to Acadians after thousands were forcibly removed from the Maritime provinces between 1755 and 1763.
The UNESCO recognition of Grand Pre is acknowledgement for the extraordinary work done by the Acadian people and local employees and volunteers vying to make Grand Pre an international landmark.
Congratulations to all involved – Grand Pre truly is a treasure for our province.
