International Women’s Day

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women's rights. Canada answered the call and declared March 8th as International Women's Day where we participate in a “global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.”

In the political world, women are underrepresented in both our provincial and federal levels of government despite making up more than 50% of the Canadian population. Provincially, only 23% of the seats in the Legislature are held by women and 22% federally. The theme this year for Canada’s International Women’s Day is “Strong Women. Strong Canada. Strong World.” and it expresses the important role women play in our society. We are reminded that increasing women's participation and access to leadership roles will strengthen our country and indeed the world.
