Whalen: Nova Scotians Deserve a February Holiday
Liberal MLA for Halifax-Clayton Park Diana Whalen says it’s time all Nova Scotians got to enjoy a February holiday, just as the majority of Canadians do, and she’s started an online petition to help send that message to the Dexter government.
This is the eighth year Whalen has lobbied for the creation of a February holiday and she’s not slowing down, despite successive governments refusing to institute a much-needed mid-winter’s break.
“I’ve asked three different premiers to give Nova Scotians a much deserved break in February,” says Whalen. “All of them, including Premier Dexter, have said, ‘No.’”
Whalen notes that nearly 70 per cent of Canadians are able to take advantage of a February holiday – that’s nearly 25 million people.
“Given that this province has the fewest statutory holidays in Canada – it’s time for this NDP government to declare a February holiday in Nova Scotia,” says Whalen.
Whalen’s February holiday bill before the Legislature calls for retail businesses to be closed on this day as it is a holiday every Nova Scotian will be able to enjoy.
"This will be a day for all Nova Scotians to spend with family and friends,” says Whalen.
“With no holiday between New Year’s and Easter, February is the perfect time to give Nova Scotians a break – some time to enjoy the company of family and friends and time to breathe in the best of our Nova Scotia winters.”
Whalen invites all Nova Scotians who support the call for a February holiday to sign her petition.
