McNeil: Independent Review of Bowater Land Purchase Needed
Liberal leader Stephen McNeil wants the auditor general’s opinion on the province’s original $25 million land purchase from Bowater to ensure the deal was fair for Nova Scotians and obeyed all policies and procedures.
“When the government spends $25 million, we need to be absolutely sure Nova Scotians received a fair deal,” says McNeil. “The only way to get an unbiased opinion is to go to an independent and respected officer of the legislature.”
McNeil says the AG’s opinion on the land purchase is even more important given recent musings by Premier Dexter about spending millions more tax dollars to buy more land from Bowater.
“The government is getting ready to give this company more money as they leave our province after laying off hundreds of Nova Scotians,” says McNeil. “Only by examining the previous land purchase in an objective manner can we ensure future deals are fair and follow proper policies and procedures.”
“We need a standard before the government moves forward – the auditor general can help develop that standard by examining the previous deal.”
