Regan: Major Changes to School Boundaries Require More Notice

Bedford-Birch Cove MLA Kelly Regan is crying foul over the lack of notice for a public meeting that could result in major changes to school boundaries in the Bedford area.

“The ad for this meeting only appeared in the newspaper last Wednesday,” says Regan. “The changes indicated in that ad would, if approved, fundamentally change school boundaries in the area and would remove all students from Waverley Road School.”

The changes would see a large part of the Sunnyside Elementary School population moving to Basinview Drive Community School, P-6 students living west of the Bicentennial Highway moving to Basinview and grades 7-9 students to Bedford Junior High. These changes would take place in September 2012.

As well, all grades 7-9 students from Bedford South and Bedford Junior High would attend junior high at the current Charles P. Allen site once that school moves to its new location on Innovation Drive, expected in September 2013.

“A week’s notice is not enough for a meeting to discuss changes of this magnitude,” says Regan. “The parents who have contacted me are frustrated by the lack of advance notice.”

“One parent pointed out that if you wanted to change the zoning of a home, there would be all kinds of notice, and individual houses nearby would have to be notified,” says Regan. “Here there’s no requirement for that, and we’re talking about moving hundreds of children.”

The HRSB meeting on school boundaries will take place on Thursday, January 12 at Basinview Community School at 7 p.m.
