McNeil: "Missed Opportunities" The Theme Of Spring Session Of The Legislature

(Halifax, NS) Liberal leader Stephen McNeil says the spring session of the legislature has been one of missed opportunity for the NDP government.

"This spring budget was an opportunity for the NDP government to make Nova Scotia more competitive and prosperous," said McNeil. "Instead, in less than a year, this government has increased the debt by more than three-quarters of a billion dollars and increased taxes. Nova Scotians will be paying for this budget for a long time to come - especially the middle class and small business."

McNeil calls the NDP government the ‘most expensive political experiment’ in the history of the province. Even on the last day of the session, the NDP government rejected a proposal from the Liberal Opposition to entrench a code of ethics for elected officials into new legislation governing MLA expenses.

"Liberals know that all elected members need to take steps to restore public trust. The code of ethics spells out in clear, simple language what is expected of those who serve in public office," said McNeil. "I am extremely disappointed the NDP government would not accept the amendments."

During this session of the legislature, the Liberal Official Opposition supported the people of southwestern Nova Scotia as they fought to restore ferry service with Maine and pressed the government for a decision on the dredging of Sydney Harbour. Liberals opposed the two per cent increase in the HST and called for a full review of the tax system in Nova Scotia to increase competitiveness with our neighbours.

"Nova Scotians were led to expect a lot of this government. No one can blame them for being disappointed."
